Weslynne Ashton is Assistant Professor in Environmental Management and Sustainability at IIT Stuart School of Business. Prior to joining IIT Stuart, she was an Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer at Yale University, where she also directed the Industrial Ecology in Developing Countries program.
In her previous position, she led research projects with collaborators in emerging economies, with a special focus on India. During this period, Dr. Ashton held visiting scholar appointments and lectured at the National University of Singapore and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) University in India.
Outside of academia, she has provided consulting expertise on cleaner production and green business strategies to the Inter-American Development Bank, United Technologies Corporation, and the Kohala Center in Hawaii. Prior to Yale, she worked as an environmental engineer at Gradient Corporation in Massachusetts, and led Trinidad and Tobago based TECH (an information technology services start-up enterprise) through its first year of operation.
In her Ph.D. dissertation work, she examined the environmental consequences of rapid industrialization in Puerto Rico, and the development of cooperative inter-firm partnerships for managing resources in the pharmaceutical sector on the island. She was recognized as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and a Teresa Heinz Scholar for Environmental Research for her work on this topic. Her work is highly multi-disciplinary, and in addition to engineering and economic analysis, also utilizes tools from social network and complex systems theories.
Her work has been published in leading environmental management journals such as the Journal of Industrial Ecology and Business Strategy and the Environment.
