Notable Quote
“An understanding heart is everything in a teacher, and cannot be esteemed highly enough. One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feeling. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the mind of the student.” Carl Jung

What excites me about Stuart?
As a business school within a technology university, the technological orientation of the school and its students have provided me with the opportunity to pursue my interest in Quality Management and Operations in teaching and in research. Further, as a school with students and faculty from many lands, there was always a global perspective (one of the earliest in the country) that students provided, that enriched my classes and contributed to their success in the global economy.

My Teaching Philosophy
Along with the ideas expressed by Jung in the quote above, I believe that in addition to capability in the subject, teaching should also improve a student’s character and commitment to his/her goals. All three of these —capability, character, and commitment -- should be taught so that the student learns to apply them in the working world.

Notable Vignette
While I was struggling through grading excessively long final papers, I realized that the excessively verbose material could be expressed more succinctly within just one sheet of paper. That has since been my requirement. It forces students to select only pertinent facts, to write clearly, to not wander from their point of view. And students have praised this method as a means of preparing them for the business world where management appreciates brevity and clarity.

My Teaching/Research Interests
The subjects of Design and Management of Effective and Efficient Organization have held my research and teaching interests for many years. In my role as Director of PhD program, interacting with the brightest minds, I am continually amazed by the human quest to acquire knowledge and make a unique contribution for a better world. I am deeply proud of how many of my students have contributed to improve Quality, Efficiency, and Effectiveness of many organizations all over the world.
