Graduate Admission

Application Checklist: Degree

Your application will be reviewed for admission consideration once the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment has received and processed all of the items on the checklist below.  Exceptions: Financial support documents and School Transfer Forms may be submitted after admission.

Within five days after you submit your application online, we will send you an email that provides your applicant ID number and explains how you can use that number to check your application status online. The application status check system is updated daily and will always display the most current information about your application.

You will also receive periodic emails from IIT Stuart, reminding you about application items we have not yet received.  If you recently submitted those items, please disregard the reminder messages.  It may take up to ten business days for your documents to be processed once received by the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment.

Please send all credentials to:

Application Checklist for Degree-Seeking Students
  1. Completed application. We encourage all applicants to apply online for the quickest processing time. A paper application is available upon request.

  2. Application fee. The $75 application fee may be paid (a) by credit card or Paypal account when prompted in the online application process, (b) by credit card through the IIT Bursar's Office payment website (select "Application Fee-Stuart Graduate" from the drop-down list and send a copy of the payment confirmation email you receive to gradstu@iit.edu), or (c) by check or money order made payable to Illinois Institute of Technology and mailed to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a). The fee is waived for applicants who have been enrolled at IIT in the past.

  3. Official transcripts (individual marksheets, where applicable) from all post-secondary institutions (undergraduate and graduate study) attended. We can accept either original documents or photocopies that have been properly attested (bearing the original, not photocopied, stamp/seal of the university and signature of a university official such as a registrar or dean on each page). Scanned or faxed transcripts/marksheets cannot be accepted.

  4. Resume. Your current resume may be submitted through the online application system, by email to admission@stuart.iit.edu, or by post.

  5. Two essays. Each essay should be no more than 1000 words in length and may be submitted through the online application system, by email to admission@stuart.iit.edu, or by post. The essay topics are:
    • Why do you wish to pursue graduate study in the program to which you are applying? Discuss how you believe graduate studies will contribute to your professional goals.
    • Develop a five-year career plan, including your professional goals and how you intend to implement them. Discuss how you believe your IIT Stuart education will fit in to your plan.

  6. Letters of recommendation. Submit two (for master's degree applicants) or three (for PhD applicants) dated letters of recommendation from people who can attest to your academic or professional qualifications. Your recommenders may choose (a) to complete an online letter of recommendation, available by invitation through your online application; (b) to fill out IIT Stuart's recommendation form; or (c) to write an original letter. Any of these options is equally acceptable.  Please choose only one form of submission.

Completed recommendation forms or original letters may be submitted by email to admission@stuart.iit.edu, by fax to 312.567.3138, or by post. Again, please choose just one form of submission. Each letter must include your full name, applicant ID number, major, and term of entry; must bear the signature of the recommender; and must be dated no more than one year prior to the first day of classes in the semester to which you've applied. Letters sent by post must be original documents. Photocopies cannot be accepted.

  7. Official standardized test scores. We require your official score report showing the results of the GMAT or GRE test taken within the past five years. Please ask the testing service to send your scores to IIT Stuart at school code 1318. No department code is required. Note: Master of Mathematical Finance applicants may submit only GRE scores. Applicants to all other programs may submit either GMAT or GRE scores.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants
  1. Translation of transcripts. If your original documents are not in English, an English translation certified by a consular official or other person authorized to translate documents must accompany the original, valid document(s), complete with the translator's original signature and seal.

  2. Official TOEFL scores. Applicants whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must prove proficiency in English by submitting official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores. Please ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your scores to institution code 1318. No department code is required.

A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 80 (Internet-based test) is required for admission consideration. Admitted students who scored between 550-599 (paper-based) or 213-249 (computer-based) or 80-99 (Internet-based test) will be required to enroll in Communication for Competitive Edge (CCE) courses at the beginning of their academic program.

Waiver: Applicants who hold degrees from institutions where the primary language of instruction is English are exempt from the TOEFL requirement.

  3. Financial support documents. Immigration regulations stipulate that financial support documents must be no more than six months old at the time an I-20 is issued. If your financial support documents have expired at the time your admission decision is made, you will be asked to submit new documents. Applicants may submit their financial support documents after being notified of admission; however, please note that an I-20 cannot be issued to an admitted student until valid documents have been received and approved by the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. Photocopied, scanned, or faxed documents cannot be accepted.

IIT Stuart accepts proof of financial support in either of the following two formats:

    a. Original bank statement showing the required amount in your bank account. The statement must be on the bank's letterhead and bear the bank official's signature and stamp (bank seal). If someone else is sponsoring your education, you must additionally submit a notarized letter from your sponsor confirming their plans to pay for your education.

    b. Bank official's signature and bank seal on IIT Stuart's Financial Support Form. Please read all instructions carefully to ensure that each required section of the form is complete.

  4. A School Transfer Form must be submitted by any international student currently studying on an F-1 visa who intends to transfer to IIT Stuart from another institution in the United States. It indicates the release of your I-20 by your current institution, permitting IIT Stuart to create a new I-20 for you. Please complete this form with an international student advisor at your current school and submit it only after you have been officially admitted to IIT Stuart. Download School Transfer Form

  5. Admitted international students currently holding another visa status in the U.S. with plans to change to an F-1 student visa will need to be issued a "Change of Status" I-20 from IIT Stuart. Please consult the IIT International Center for assistance with this process.
*Please do not send secondary school transcripts, award certificates, personal photos, CDs, disks, research papers or abstracts. These items will be discarded.
