Alumni Feedback

I want to say thank you again for always being a valuable resource. The students & teachers I have met in the EM program were all phenomenal individuals and I look forward to see what the future brings for all of us and I really hope that we can all make a difference. I have enjoyed the EM program and the students in such program.

YVR - 2006

I am working in the area of Global Energy and Sustainability, so I guess the internship was a perfect match with my background after I finished with the EM program. I feel like almost everything that they discuss, one way or another we had already discussed in some of our classes in Stuart. Currently, I am working in a greenhouse gas emissions inventory project for all of the corporate Johnson Controls buildings within the US.

I feel that the EM program provided me with a well-rounded background, one that I have been able to apply in most aspects of my current position. From safety to pollution control to rules and regulations, the EM program teaches it all. From a personal standpoint, the EM program is a refreshing boost in an otherwise wasteful, environmentally unfriendly world. I am sure that EM alumni are working hard to "save the planet."

The IIT MS Environmental Management program allows the student to create new paths within their industry. My job title may not have changed significantly to date but the work I do and create has. Instead of looking just at my facilities I now look into our customers processes. Our customers create power, chemicals, and energy. For example before my experience at IIT I was concerned with waste reduction at my service center. Not only did IIT help me to eliminate waste at my facility it opened my eyes to the possibility of taking my job in an entirely new direction. My main focus is still running the ES&H/QA programs at my 10 plus sites. But I schedule time to visit customers and discuss emission reductions, VOC issues and their ISO 14000 implementation plans.

I started the Masters Program in Environmental Management in mid-career and completed it while working full-time. The downtown location and course schedule was very convenient and was a big plus in selecting IIT. The EM program has enabled me to understand the underlying business decisions that affect issues of environmental management, safety and sustainability. A great number of IIT professors are farsighted and ahead of the curve. Many of the concepts that were taught are just now reaching the main stream. The additional education was a great way to understand and align priorities in my current work at the University of Chicago Hospitals and work toward sustainability.

I am the Environmental Risk Manager for First Industrial Realty Trust, a publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT) with over 1100 properties across the US. I handle environmental due diligence for acquisitions and divestures as well as manage our on-going environmental issues in our portfolio.

Prior to my position with First, I was an environmental consultant doing mostly local work for a variety of public and private clients. Although a significant amount of my knowledge came from direct work experiences over the last 12 years, the EM degree from IIT was clearly instrumental in securing my highly visible and scrutinized position on First Industrial.

As a side note, during my consulting years, I was able to hire three students that I met while at IIT. All turned out to be great work experiences for both sides. This simply illustrates how effective the program can be at networking.

I have been employed in the chemical processing industry since 1969. I became the EHS Manager of the Rohm and Haas Company's Chicago Heights Plant in 1990, although I had no academic credentials in the EHS field. In 1996 I learned about the Masters in Environmental Management program at IIT, and coincidently had completed a term as an officer in another organization. That point became the nexus of time resources, career development need, and opportunity to apply to the Environmental Management program.

I was able to complete the program in less than 2 years. I found the professors to be highly qualified educators, the curriculum challenging and relevant, and fellow students to be great professional contacts.

Within three years since graduation in 1998, my EM degree has been a critical factor in two job grade advances and one advancement in profession. I am now a Corporate EHS Auditor, and in this position I lead and coordinate a group of up to 7 EHS professionals in audits of environmental, health, safety, and medical regulatory and corporate programs of 130 facilities in 35 countries.

I really appreciated the EM program. Having spent 25 years in EHS with the Federal government and industry, the capstone courses and specifically Industrial Ecology tied things together.

I was the first student to undertake EM program as part of a joint degree with Chicago-Kent College of Law. It makes me very happy to hear that the program is doing so well and getting such great recognition.

The program has helped to make me more familiar with the environmental issues I am now litigating. In addition, my having such a masters that specializes in the environmental arena helped me to both get the job I have and increase my starting salary.

Prior to completing the EM program I worked as a Safety Engineer for eight years. Since completing the EM program I have held three different environmental positions with increasing levels of responsibility. I am currently responsible for the management of health, safety and environmental issues at a small chemical plant. The EM program enabled me to gain the academic credentials that helped open the door to the environmental field.

The EM program helped to give me a general knowledge of issues within my specialty (air testing) and throughout the environmental spectrum. The instructors were all professionals in their field, and most of the students were as well. This made for a rich learning environment in the classroom. The combination of technical, legal, and business classes has helped me to be a more well-rounded environmental professional.

I work on a variety of projects including pollution prevention, site remediation, permitting, and emergency response for hazardous material incidents, to name a few. The degree from IIT has helped mainly in the pollution prevention area. However, the main impact of the degree is that it makes me more marketable to employers and has helped me increase salary.

The Environmental Management program at the Stuart School of Business has provided me the opportunity to enter into the Environmental, Health & Safety profession. Having a Masters from the Stuart School of Business has added depth not only to my resume but also to my experience and skill level.

I would like to express my satisfaction for being in the EM program. I will definitely use everything I learned. I believe there will also be an opportunity to return to Stuart soon with some interesting projects. I will be very happy if this happens. Meanwhile, I will do my best to realize the project with the Bulgarian Environmental Authority.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I really enjoyed my graduate work in the EM program at the Stuart School. Since I was involved from the beginning of the program, I have seen it evolve into a well-honed, integrated program, with the coursework becoming more professional and structured with each passing quarter. I wish the program continued success in the coming years.

The EM degree has helped me in no small measure to obtain my current position. Although I don't have the opportunity to apply a great deal of the subject matter covered in the EM program, I think that it has helped me to take a step in the right direction.

Just wanted to say thanks for all that I was able to learn from you and the other EM professors throughout my tenure. I never imagined how much knowledge I could have gained through the course of this journey. When I first started, I began with Industrial Ecology, and am not afraid to admit I was a bit intimidated by the subject matter, and the concept of bringing sustainability into the workplace. I can confidently say now that I feel so comfortable with all the information I have gathered through this degree that I wouldn't hesitate to approach a problem like that, and know that I have all the tools necessary to tackle it.
