Description
Environmental sustainability is a major global challenge, and the environmental management field is growing in response to this demand. IIT Stuart’s Master of Science in Environmental Management and Sustainability integrates law, science and business to answer the increasing demand for a uniquely trained management professional that understands the many complex dimensions of environmental and social sustainability issues today.
As one of only a handful of such programs in the United States—and the only one in the Chicago area—IIT Stuart’s Environmental Management and Sustainability offers thorough preparation for environmental management positions in a wide range of areas, including manufacturing, service, consulting, not-for-profit, and government.
As a graduate of this program, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills you need to:
• Manage in an era of rising energy demand, water shortage and climate change
• Plan, manage, and communicate environmental control and waste reduction strategies
• Evaluate competing technical, economic, legal, and regulatory interests
• Facilitate and monitor compliance with air and water pollution and solid and hazardous waste disposal regulations at the state and federal levels
• Apply the new concepts of "industrial ecology," "design for environment," and the energy-environment-economics (E3) paradigm
• Understand how corporations develop competitive advantages within the context of environmental constraints and the public’s endorsement of green products, green services and sustainable development
A World-ranked program is even better!
Since 1999, IIT-Stuart has been ranked one of the top programs in the world for integrating environmental and social sustainability according to the Beyond Grey Pinstripes biennial survey by the World Resources Institute and the Aspen Institute.
In the most recent report of Beyond Grey Pinstripes (2007/08), the Aspen Institute surveyed of over 600 accredited graduate business schools in the world and determined that IIT-Stuart is ranked
*Overall number 48 in the world
*Overall number 35 in the U.S.
*Overall number 1 in Chicago
*In terms of course content, number 11 in the world.
*In terms of course content, number 8 in the U.S.
*In terms of course content, number 1 in Chicago
Despite the excellent ranking, Stuart has improved the program further by adding five new courses such as Carbon Management & Climate Change and Sustainable Communities.
What will the EM Program do for you?
The best way to answer this question is to hear directly from the graduates themselves. Just click on Alumni Feedback and read what all these former students have to say.
The majority of the students in the program are working professionals and are enrolled in the program to improve their skills and their career. The full-time students are given the opportunity to obtain internships while in the program, and most of these positions convert to full-time jobs. While Stuart does not guarantee anyone an internship or a full-time position upon completion of the program, the success rate in placing the students during the past few years has been 100%. This benefit is the result of the reputation gained by this program and demand by the EM alumni to fill positions at their place of employment.

You’ll learn numerous strategies to achieve competitive advantage through social equity, economic viability and environmental integrity, all with an emphasis on the importance of sustainability at both the global and enterprise level.
Interdisciplinary approach
In order to provide a truly interdisciplinary perspective, IIT Stuart’s Environmental Management and Sustainability program has joined forces with Chicago-Kent College of Law and IIT's Environmental Engineering department. Chicago-Kent's pioneering program in environmental and energy law, established in 1984 and consistently ranked among the best offered by U.S. law schools, has a distinguished faculty with special expertise in:
• Environmental law
• Land use
• Energy law
• Water rights
• Natural resources
Additionally, IIT's Environmental Engineering program is particularly strong in:
• Industrial water minimization
• Pollution abatement
• Hazardous waste management
• Energy and economics
Hands-on opportunities
The Environmental Management and Sustainability program also emphasizes real-world thinking and problem solving. In order to provide hands-on experience, IIT Stuart helps organize internships and study projects that enhance the classroom learning experience. Some recent examples include:
• Working with business and government to test whether a wind turbine could be an environmentally-friendly energy source for urban life
• Partnering with a local environmental service firm to develop an innovative business model
• Applying Geographical Information Systems technology to map and manage corporate and community assets
• Conducting a Life-Cycle-Analysis for a new product from a Fortune 500 company
• Conduct an energy efficiency audit of IIT’s Downtown Campus to demonstrate how energy savings can be obtained
