Finance Concentration

Description
The PhD concentration in Finance emphasizes application of the techniques of management science to the area of finance.

Management science techniques such as simulation, optimization and data analysis are widely used in both corporate finance and investment analysis. In corporate finance, market participants must understand how these techniques can be productively used to promote corporate objectives and to manage risk, especially with respect to valuing complex derivatives such as exotic options, caps, collars, and floors. These skills are also employed by institutional investors who also use the techniques of management science for portfolio selection and financial forecasting.

There are a variety of research areas in the financial applications of management science. IIT Stuart has partnered with IIT's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, to actively conduct research relating to the deregulation and privatization of energy markets. Additionally, we’re conducting new product research relating to derivative products for the insurance industry and to the development of contracts relating to weather, rainfall, and industrial pollution. Research relating to risk management includes the application of Value at Risk methodology to quantify market risk exposure and the development of new techniques for the measurement of credit exposure. Investment and trading research covers new developments in portfolio selection, financial forecasting, and valuation analysis.

The Finance concentration is based upon the core competencies of:

• Modeling
• Valuing financial instruments
